👀 Why now? In the next module, you’ll be unlocking Mary Tyler Moore–inspired cigarette capris—a structured bottom piece. So this month's body-con dress gives you a chance to focus on fit, proportion, and upper-body shaping before we move into trousers and tailored pants again.

🧵 Grace Kelly Body-Con Dress Features:
🩱 Elegant Contour, Zero Fuss – Designed in a double knit or ponte fabric, this piece glides over the body—no darts, no pleats, and no zipper required (unless you want one).
📏 Precision Neckline Fit – The real magic? It’s all in the measuring. Make sure to revisit our "Blender" and “Hip/Waist Blending” lessons from earlier modules to master your personal fit.
🛠️ Construction Confidence – With simple shaping and smart knit fabric choices, this is one of those dresses that looks custom-tailored, even with minimal sewing steps.
🌿 Fabric Tip for the Body Con Dress:
Pick medium-weight knit fabrics with minimum 5% spandex. Keep in mind, you’ll be wearing this over 80% of your body, so consider breathability of the fabric. Also, the sponginess of the fabric should be considered for the seaming and neckline. This is particularly true with modal and as the spandex % increases.
Should be composed of polyester or blends of polyester, but not 100% in composition of: cotton, rayon, modal or bamboo.
Ponte de Roma, Double Ponte, Stretch Ponte Knit, Double Knit, Interlock (watch the stretch), Heavy Weight Modal blends, Light weight Scuba Knit, Viscose Jersey
You want a 4 way stretch what is stable. Not drooping vertically.
The right drape makes the difference. Choose fabrics with fluid movement—not stiff and not drooping! Think a bit like a bathing suit but for clothing.
✂️ Bonus Notion Tip: You can use a zipper, but it’s not required to get into your dress. Use Stay Tape/Interfacing on armholes, neckline and back.
💬 Remember, like all Design Secrets projects, the Body Con Dress is designed for serious sewists.
While the pattern is fairly easy to follow, the single bias finishing on the armholes and back and the neckband combination are a little tricky for the beginner. Mastering this fine sewing construction is quite an achievement.
