Kimono Costume Notions:

The Anatomy of a Kimono Costume

Our pattern is an adalted or redesigned kimono from a traditional version. A traditional kimono costume consists of several key components as shown below:

  1. Kimono (着物): The main garment, usually made from silk or other fine fabrics, with long, wide sleeves and a wrap-around design. It is often decorated with intricate patterns and designs.

  2. Obi (帯): A wide belt wrapped around the waist, tied at the back in a decorative knot or bow. The obi is one of the most significant accessories, and its color and style can vary depending on the formality of the occasion.

  3. Nagajuban (長襦袢): An undergarment worn beneath the kimono to protect it from sweat and oils. It’s usually made of lightweight, breathable fabric and often has a collar that is visible at the neckline.

  4. Obiage (帯揚げ): A decorative sash or scarf that helps to secure the obi in place. It’s tucked into the top of the obi and often adds a splash of color or contrast to the ensemble.

  5. Obijime (帯締め): A decorative cord used to hold the obi in place. It is tied over the obi and usually matches or complements the color scheme of the outfit.

  6. Haneri (半襟): A detachable collar worn over the nagajuban, visible at the neckline of the kimono. It can be plain or embroidered, adding a decorative element to the outfit.

  7. Tabi (足袋): Traditional split-toe socks worn with the kimono. They are typically white and are worn with zori (traditional sandals) or geta (wooden clogs). [Buy Socks Here}

  8. Zori (草履) or Geta (下駄): Footwear traditionally worn with a kimono. Buy Sandals here. Zori are more formal, resembling flip-flops with a slight heel, while geta are wooden sandals with elevated platforms.

  9. Koshihimo (腰紐): Thin belts or cords used to hold the kimono in place while wrapping and securing the layers before the obi is tied.

  10. Eri-shin (襟芯): A stiffener inserted into the collar of the nagajuban or haneri to keep it straight and crisp.
