Met Gala 2024: Sewing Inspiration from 'The Garden of Time'

Step into the captivating world where fabric becomes a canvas for magic storytelling! The 2024 Met Gala's theme, "The Garden of Time", inspired designers and celebrities to blend myth, fairy tales and surreal landscapes into breathtaking creations. For sewing enthusiasts like us in the SPS community and history buffs alike, it was a night of pure delight and inspiration.
Embroidered Tales: Design Highlights
The dress code, themed "The Garden of Time," encouraged attendees to explore botanical and temporal motifs, resulting in an array of breathtaking designs. Notable highlights included Jennifer Lopez's Schiaparelli gown adorned with 2.5 million silver foil bugle beads, a labor of love that required 800 hours to create, and Ashley Graham's Ludovic de Saint Sernin creation featuring a handmade sheer skirt embellished with small crystals, taking over 500 hours to complete. It’s a reminder of the magic that happens when creativity meets craftsmanship. Lil Nas X wore an outfit designed by Raul Lopez of Luar, which had embellishments of 50,000 Swarovski crystals.
Celestial Stitches: Celebrity Highlights
This year’s Met Gala showcased a dazzling display of creativity with celebrities embracing both floral and avant-garde fashion, transforming into living works of art. Celebrities like Nicki Minaj, who wore a Marni dress adorned with hand-painted metal flowers, Gigi Hadid in a Thom Browne, three-dimensional floral ballgown with intricate detailing and voluminous silhouette, Ayo Edebiri wore the Loewe Gown adorned with 3D floral lace. Lana Del Rey brought forward the drama with a veiled Alexander McQueen look and an antlered headpiece, paying homage to the late designer’s iconic fall 2006 collection, Tyla’s Balmain gown, which fit like a second skin and resembled a sand sculpture, showcased innovative design and pushed the boundaries of traditional red carpet fashion.
