Last year we ran an article “Getting Started Sewing for the Beginner for Under $250”. Unfortunately, this year during our link check, I realized some of the products are no longer available, so I’ve updated our list. The total has increased by $25, but the good news is … we’ve added in a printer.

During my research I found certain fabrics and tools are more affordable for the beginner level, but I found good quality thread was more expensive than last year. I found Gingher brand scissors at an unbelievably good price and I’m still wondering why. I also found a person in NC who will fix and sharpen your high end scissors for $15, so I’ll be updating our article on sharpening scissors shortly.

We’ve kept the Brother Sewing Machine on the list because the price is the same as last year and it’s a great quality machine with tons of support. We’ve added in a color printer option, but a black and white printer will also do the trick. It’s the very same type our seamstresses used to sample our patterns. They loved it. I was delightfully surprised to find printers are more affordable than ever and our top pick comes with 2 years of ink. We do not recommend refurbished printers. Also it’s important to remember, if equipment is purchased through the manufacturer it comes with a warranty..
