This expert-level pattern is designed for seasoned sewists like you, offering advanced features that’ll keep you both stylish and protected from the elements.

If you’re still getting eaten alive by mosquitoes or ducking out of your evening walks because of a breeze or drizzle — that’s on you.

Why?

Because now there’s a way to sew your own pro-grade windbreaker — one that actually fits, actually protects, and actually looks like something off the REI rack (without the $120 price tag).

Introducing the Women’s Windbreaker Pattern — a no-fluff, high-function, expert-level project built for sewists who are ready to stop making “easy” things and start sewing things that matter.

✅ Full coverage and sleek shaping
✅ Perfect for hikes, campsites, or windy walks
✅ Advanced techniques for serious makers only

This isn’t a weekend beginner project. It’s for the experienced sewist who’s ready to make something that punches back at the elements — and does it with style.

So… tired of swatting, sweating, and settling?

This is your next sew.
No buzz. No nonsense. Just results.

🌟 Vest Features:

  • Zip-Front Lightweight Vest

  • Removable Hood with snap attachment

  • 🌧️Hood with Built-in Visor and Drawcords

  • Side Pockets for your essentials

  • 📱Zip-Closed Cell Phone Pocket at the breast

  • Side Stretch Panels for extra comfort

  • 🦟Bug Netting Head Covering for ultimate insect defense

Sizes: Fitted 6-14 (closer to the body with about 1.5” of ease)

Unlike many of our other patterns, this windbreaker fits snugger for that sleek, sporty vibe. You can even add a little length if you prefer more coverage!

🧵 Fabric Recommendations:

For the main fabric, we suggest something durable yet breathable, like Poly or Cotton Ripstop, or DWR Nylon. For this project, we used OTTERTEX NYLON RIPSTOP 70 DENIER (1.9 oz)—lightweight, water-proof, and a spray on bug repellent. Perfect for outdoor adventures! 🏞️

IMPORTANT NOTE: A cotton ripstop will be easier to work with and not require melting any edges.

For the lining, go with a lighter fabric (1-3 oz) like Poly Microfiber or Batiste. And don't forget the mesh fabric for the mosquito netting—because staying bug-free has never been this stylish! 🦸‍♀️

Add a pop of contrast with fabrics like a Ponte Knit for the side panels and bias tape. Need more details?

🦟Bug Repellent Suggestions

For a pet-safe option, use a picaridin-based insect repellent, which is effective for people and won’t harm your pets when applied to clothing. Avoid permethrin-based products as they are toxic to cats, and consider using a lemon eucalyptus oil-based spray like Murphy’s Plant-Based Lemon Eucalyptus Insect Repellent Wipes or pump spray, or a natural alternative.

🛠️ Notions You’ll Need:

💡 Pro Tips and Tools for Success:

  1. Equipment Matters: Use a serger for professional-looking seams. If you don’t have one, an overlock foot or zipper foot will work for ripstop fabrics—just be prepared for a bit more patience. 😅

  2. Cut it Clean: A rotary cutter with a sharp blade is your best friend for reducing frays, especially when working with ripstop or delicate mesh fabrics. ✂️

  3. Foot Power: If you’re using a regular sewing machine, make sure to use a walking foot for those tricky fabrics and a zipper foot (universal zipper foot) for precision when adding the zippers.

  4. Bias Tape Perfection: When cutting the armhole band fabric, ensure the direction of the greatest stretch runs along the length of the pattern piece for better flexibility. 🧵

This project is truly worth the effort, and you’ll love having it for those hot, buggy days! Whether you're gearing up for a hike, a walk, or a picnic in the park, this windbreaker will have you looking chic and feeling prepared. 🌳🧳
